Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago is elected to his sixth term. If he completes it, he will have served 22 years, eclipsing his father as the longest serving mayor of the Windy City.

Master P and his brother Silkk the Shocker are ordered by to stand trial on gun charges stemming from a January 2005 incident where they were stopped on the U-C-L-A campus and police found both to have loaded handguns under their car seats.

Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby is the big winner at the Oscars, hosted (for the first time) by Chris Rock.

20 people working at Boston's Logan International Airport are charged with lying to get their jobs or security badges.

Erykah Badu, Heavy D and Patti Labelle cohost the 12th annual Soul Train Music Awards in Los Angeles. Badu, Ronnie Isley, Monica and Kenny Lattimore do a musical tribute to Whitney Houston. Badu collects four awards. Puff Daddy gets the Sammy Davis Junior Award for Entertainer of the Year and the Michael Jackson Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Video, for "I'll Be Missing You." Dru Hill also gets two. Winners include Usher, Biggie and God's Property.

Michael Jackson gets one for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and Donna Summer wins for "Hot Stuff," but Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is named Best Disco Recording.
